East Village Organizations Work to Preserve Traditional Theater

La Plaza Cultural Community Garden, a community garden and non-profit organization in the heart of the East Village, hosts free events for people of all ages throughout the spring and summer to cultivate culture and a sense of community. In July, Tale Told Productions used the garden space to perform their interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew as part of an annual Seven Day Shakespeare drama festival, in which the cast and crew produce an entire play in just one week.

In past years, they have recreated Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, and The Tempest. The play drew members of the local East Village community.

La Plaza Cultural is not the only place in the East Village that encourages the performing arts. United Citizens Brigade Theater presents an array of improv performances and stand-up comedy shows throughout the year. On the opposite end of the theater spectrum, Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe nurtures artistry of a more serious and emotional caliber, providing a space for poets, dancers, and musicians to congregate and share their work. The Theater for The New City works to notice new and upcoming artists, performing original works created by local writers. By working hard to make the arts more accessible to the masses, these organizations preserve the fundamentals of theater while bringing the community together.
